The Mini, or Mini Cooper, is undoubtedly a much-loved vehicle here in the UK. While it may not be to all of our driving standards, there’s no denying that it holds a special place in the country’s history, and understandably so. Debuting in 1959 and maintaining its quintessential image all the way through to today – though now with a BMW twist – it has become an icon in itself. However, while Mini is certainly iconic, owners still have their share of concerns when it comes to their cars. Automatic Transmission 

Mini Cooper owners have reported failure of the automatic transmission at barely over 100,000 miles, particularly with the models produced before 2010. According to EnginePatrol, this issue could be a result of the advertised “sealed for life” transmission style which would mean it “doesn’t need to be opened up”. (https://enginepatrol.com/mini-cooper-problems/#7_Transmission_Failure) However, without being opened up, transmission fluid changes cannot be made and build-up can increase over the years. With fluid changes recommended every 30,000 miles, this can be devastating.

Timing Chain

Another issue reported by owners of Mini Cooper vehicles, is that they seem prone to is movement and loosening of the timing chain. Over time, the timing chain and assembly will wear down and this can cause slack in the mechanism. While Mini isn’t the only vehicle to suffer from this issue, MotorandWheels claim that the issues “can be observed in the form of strange noises, engine vibrations, or power loss.” (https://motorandwheels.com/mini-cooper-problems/) It’s crucial that drivers get this issue repaired as soon as possible. Without repair, the problem can worsen and it can go on to cause further damage to the vehicle and the engine, ultimately resulting in higher costs.

Airbags

A recall issued in 2015 saw Mini Cooper fall prey to the widespread Takata airbag problem that affected a number of different manufacturers and models. The recall issued by Mini in 2015 saw 6,063 Mini Cooper models between 2013-2016 recalled for a Takata issue that may see the airbags not deplot properly. However, there are other reported issues with airbags in Mini vehicles – according to EnginePatrol, owners “report that their air bag warning light comes on” and often intermittently. This was likely due to a failed from passenger seat sensor, requiring replacement. (https://enginepatrol.com/mini-cooper-problems/#2_Air_Bag_Problems)

Power Steering

In April 2020, BMW faced a lawsuit for power steering problems in several of their Mini Cooper models. The issue saw an unexpected and often unpredictable loss of power steering while on the road which could lead to damage, injury or, in some cases, vehicle fires. EnginePatrol reported that the lawsuit involved a recall of the 2002-2005 Mini Cooper, the Mini Cooper S models, and the 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible or Mini Cooper S Convertible.
