DSG gearboxes offer drivers a driving experience like no other but at their core, they are still a piece of machinery that can go wrong from time to time. DSG gearboxes are a complex system utilising a dual-clutch, multi-speed system that makes the drive experience smooth and seamless, but with lots of moving parts to consider, it’s easy for things to go wrong. From shaking and shuddering to grinding noises or even overheating, there are a few relatively common problems that owners of cars with DSG gearboxes can face and knowing what to keep your eye out for could help you resolve the issue before it becomes an expensive repair. Here’s what you need to know.
Shaking and Juddering
If your gearbox is shaking or juddering while you’re out on the road, this is a sign that something isn’t quite right. DSG transmissions are made to be smooth and seamless and so any hiccups along the way can prove problematic. Owners have reported issues with juddering while accelerating and shifting between 1st and a higher gear, most commonly found in 7-speed DSG transmissions. This could be a result of wear on the clutch packs that might need replacing in order to return to proper function. If you are unsure, we can check this for you here at Service4Service and arrange for replacement parts if it’s clear you need these replaced. Left unchecked and untreated, it could lead to more lasting damage on the flywheel, so it’s best to get this issue checked as soon as the juddering or shaking starts.
Solenoid Valves
The Solenoid Valves of your DSG transmission are an important part of proper function and when they go wrong, it can lead to delayed engagement, juddering and more. Full diagnostics can find the source of the issue, but valve blockages and issues can often be caused by electrical issues or oil contamination, or a combination of both. Repairs can be done by your mechanic, who may just need to fix any faulty mechatronics components rather than replace the whole unit.
Mechatronic Leaks
Leaks in the mechatronics unit are unfortunately common for DSG owners and are usually traced back to issues with the gasket within the system. The unit sits within a metal housing that attaches to the DSG transmission with a gasket and screws, but when these are damaged or wear down, leaks can occur. Depending on whether the gasket is the problem, or there is an issue with the mechatronics housing itself, this could be a relatively quick fix, or a costly repair. It’s best to get your vehicle checked by an expert before any long journeys to ensure that you get the issue remedied quickly.
Mechatronic Failures
Mechatronics are a crucial part of the DSG system, and are also the source of a number of issues. A failure in the unit can lead to all kinds of issues including:
- Solenoid Valve failures
- High-pressure valve leaks
- Electric Motor failure
- High-pressure pump failure
- Other module or sensor failures
These will often flag up as a diagnostics code when inspected by a professional and could require a few small tweaks, or complete replacement depending on the severity. Keep an eye out for rough gear shifts, juddering, delayed shifts and even your gearbox jumping to neutral on its own – these can all be signs that something is wrong in the mechatronic unit.
