Fiat vehicles are some of the most popular vehicles around, and understandably so. From the Fiat 500 and its popularity amongst young and new drivers to the new hybrid options for the 500X and Tipo, Fiat is still holding its own in today’s automotive market. Their ease to drive, affordability and reliability make them the perfect choice for drivers, but like any make, Fiat’s aren’t exempt from consumer concerns. From overheating engines to strange smells in the cabin, here are some of the most common problems you could face with your Fiat vehicle.
Overheating Engine
According to reports, Fiat vehicles, in particular the Fiat 500, have been reportedly prone to an overheated engine. AllCarParts report that the “500 develops overheating issues over time” often caused by “coolant [leaking] from somewhere” which triggers a warning light on the dash. (https://allcarparts.co.uk/common-problems-with-the-fiat-500/) If your vehicle is a Fiat 500 manufactured in 2008, this could be caused by a failure in the head gasket. A recall was put in place for this particular model year as the issue with the head gasket was seen as being widespread enough to be a manufacturing issue. Not every Fiat vehicle will be included, however, but replacement can still be completed in order to repair the problem.
Incorrect Tyre Pressure Placard
The 2015 Fiat 500 has a unique issue that, while not damaging on its own, could certainly trigger some damaging effects! The Tyre pressure placard that indicates which pressure is needed for the spare tyre was incorrect, “exceed[ing] its maximum working pressure”, according to MotorBiscuit. (https://www.motorbiscuit.com/6-common-faults-with-the-fiat-500/) This issue could lead to owners overinflating the tyre and ultimately causing damage, or even increasing the risk of a crash while out on the road. A NHTSA recall was issued, and the information was replaced with an overlay. If your vehicle does not have this, it’s important to check if your vehicle was part of this recall.
Faulty Power Steering
In June 2014, there was an immediate recall of Fiat 500s when an issue arose regarding the power steering in the vehicle. This issue saw “faulty wiring beneath the steering column” which would lead to a loss of power in the steering in the affected model years. (https://allcarparts.co.uk/common-problems-with-the-fiat-500/) This would put these cars and their drivers at higher risk of accidents. The problem was reportedly caused by premature wear and sudden electrical failures. If you have a Fiat 500 from before 2014, check the recall years – you may be entitled to replacement or repair.
Clutch Issues
Fiat 500 owners have another recall to be aware of, and this one involves the clutch. Owners reportedly find “difficulty engaging the clutch pedal”, which can ultimately lead to a lack of pressure when depressing the pedal. Manual vehicles were seemingly prone to fracturing and failure within the clutch diaphragm, which would make driving not only difficult, but dangerous. The NHTSA released another recall in 2016 for this issue, and repair often includes simply replacing the part.
