Renault vehicles are often renowned for their affordability and their reliability, however like all manufacturers, some of their models can experience problems that give owners cause for concern. From concerns about the electrical system, to fuel leaks, parking brake issues and odd sounds from the engine, there are a number of commonly reported things you can look out for to ensure that your Renault remains in top shape. Here are some of the most common problems with Renault cars as reported by owners.
Electrical System Failures
The Renault Megane is one of the most popular but arguably the most complained about Renault models. One of the key problems reported by owners relates to issues with the electrical system, which can ultimately manifest in issues throughout the entire car. Faulty wiring and electrics can affect something as simple as the air conditioning or the windows, or could even lead to crucial safety issues including faulty power steering, or other safety features that do not work. The components within the electrical systems all play a different role in keeping the car running smoothly, and the Renault Megane has been known to face a fair few. The Scenic on the other hand, also experiences electrical issues, however, these seemed to be related to the rear windows, and models were even recalled as a result.
Fuel Leaks
Fuel leaks can happen to every vehicle, but Renault has been reported as experiencing issues with the fuel hoses, wiring and pipework. The Scenic models from 2019 onwards have been plagued by issues with internal force causing the hoses and pipes to leak and ultimately lead to fuel level problems. This particular problem is usually easily repaired by replacing the fuel pipe or related accessories and can be done quickly and efficiently to get you back on the road as soon as possible.
Parking Brake Problems
The parking brake system in any car is a crucial safety feature that has to be in perfect working order for safe driving and unfortunately, a significant number of Renault models appear to have been plagued by faulty parking brakes according to consumer reports. The Megane usually experiences faults at around 60,000 miles, with the unit breaking down and failing to engage. The Scenic on the other hand can experience similar, but typically lasts longer, even over 140,000 miles. The errors can boil down to errors in the motors, the relay or even a seizing cable.
Clicking Sounds From the Engine
Clicking noises from the engine are another unfortunately commonly reported occurrence in Renault vehicles. This is typically present if the car fails to start or turn over and could actually be one of two things – the first, a fault and the second, an older security feature! The fault at hand is usually related to the battery, whether it’s faulty or simply weak, not providing enough power or signal to the starter motor. A battery test can tell you if that’s the issue you’re facing in that particular case. The other issue isn’t an issue at all – older Renault models are known to give you 30 seconds from unlocking the car to start it up and if not started up in that time, can lock and won’t start up at all, resulting in the clicking noise.
Transmission Problems
Transmission issues are another potential problem that plague a number of cars, and the Renault range is no exception. The Megane, Clio and Scenic have all had reported issues with their transmissions, including banging sounds and the gears failing to work completely. We don’t need to tell you how dangerous this can be! This issue in particular comes into play when a loud bang is heard, and the gears get stuck. If you’re already out on the road, particularly at high speeds, this could stop you from being able to slow down, stop or even throw off your control of the car completely.
If you’re considering a Renault vehicle, don’t let this list put you off – with proper maintenance and care, Renault offers some impressive vehicles that are perfect for the everyday driver.
